Snow Information
Oaklyn Public Works crews will be salting, shoveling, and plowing our roads and sidewalks if this storm moves through our area bringing accumulations tonight into tomorrow. If we receive enough snow for plowing, we ask all residents to remove their vehicles from our streets per town Ordinance 120-7 so OPW may effectively complete plowing. Off the street parking is available in our Boro Parking Lots and possibly in neighbors driveways.
We also ask all business owners and residents to clear their sidewalks to safely allow pedestrians to navigate our sidewalks in a timely manor.
During this storm please keep an eye out for our neighbors and seniors who may need a helping hand during.
As always our excellent Police, Fire Department, and Public Works Department are working hard to keep our town safe during this storm. ❄️🌨❄️

The Mayor and Council would like to share information regarding the removal of trees on Clinton Avenue. The Borough of Oaklyn has been planning a revamp of the downtown streetscape along Clinton Avenue for the better part of a year. The last major update took place more than 20 years ago. This project has been discussed at multiple council meetings over the past several months and has been fully planned and budgeted. To ensure cost efficiency, the Borough is completing the work through our Public Works Department rather than hiring subcontractors.
This is a multi-step project that has been underway for several months. It began with budgeting last winter, followed by assessment and planning throughout the spring and summer. The current phase, taking place this fall and winter, involves removing certain trees. The next steps will include removing old sidewalks, preparing the area, replacing sidewalk sections, and completing replanting. These phases will continue into the spring and summer.
During the planning process, members of Council, Oaklyn Public Works (OPW), and volunteer community members from the Shade Tree Committee conducted a walkthrough of Clinton Avenue last spring. The Borough listened to their input, reviewed recommended removals, and discussed ideas for replacement trees. Public Works also consulted the county arborist for additional guidance on both tree health and streetscape design. All of this feedback was incorporated into the plan.
The decision to remove multiple trees on Clinton Avenue was based on several factors, including species type, proximity to overhead power lines, and root systems that were lifting and damaging sidewalks. The Borough’s top priority is ensuring safe, accessible sidewalks. We also aim to replant species that will grow appropriately within the space, support the environment, and avoid future infrastructure damage. This approach helps maximize the lifespan of both new trees and the surrounding sidewalks.
During the initial assessment last spring, the Borough hoped to preserve the tree at Tonewood, located at Clinton and Woodland Terrace. However, as it continued to grow throughout the spring, summer, and fall, it became clear that the tree’s size, along with its growth into power lines and around a transformer, posed concerns. Ultimately, the Borough made the difficult decision to remove it as part of the project. A new, appropriately sized tree—selected for height, canopy width, and root compatibility with the updated streetscape—will be planted in its place.
All trees currently being removed by Public Works will be fully taken down, and those areas will be prepared for new plantings. Plans include widening root-bed spaces where feasible. The county arborist has provided recommended species, and the Borough will review these options with the Shade Tree Committee. Tree selections will be based on sidewalk space constraints, with smaller species placed under power lines and larger species planted in areas without height obstructions.
The timeline for new plantings will depend on project progress, but planting is anticipated for next spring or early summer. Replacement costs have already been included in the project budget.
It is never our intention to leave residents uninformed. Our meetings are open to the public each month, and we encourage residents to attend. The Retrospect reports on our meetings, and we also share information on the Borough website and through our town information app.
That said, the Mayor and Council recognize that communication can always be improved. Hundreds of operational tasks occur each month to keep the town running, and not every action is publicly announced. We strive to share information we believe is most important. We have made improvements in recent years—particularly with updates to our website and the launch of the town app—but acknowledge there's always room to grow. Resident engagement helps us communicate more effectively, and issues most often arise when residents are unaware or disagree with a decision. We will continue working to share important updates whenever possible.
Please note that Borough social media accounts are used only for general public information. Specific issues or concerns will not be addressed through social media. We continue to encourage residents to attend council meetings or reach out to the Mayor and Council via email to share input or concerns.
This project has been carefully planned with the long-term health of the streetscape and the safety of the community in mind. The Borough values its tree canopy and does not remove healthy trees without cause. All decisions have been made with thoughtful consideration of environmental, aesthetic, and infrastructure needs
