Good morning. We received an email today from NJDOT’s consulting engineers informing us that they are starting the next phase of the Route 30 Cooper Street to Grove Street Project. This project is a six-mile pavement and infrastructure improvement effort that goes from Camden down to Haddon Heights along Route 30 (White Horse Pike). In the information listed below it states they are starting this work next Monday, 9/21, at the section of Magill Ave and Route 30 in Collingswood and working their way East on Route 30. As they move East they will be working towards Oaklyn so I wanted to notify every one of their plans as they will be in Oaklyn in the coming weeks. This information is also going out on our app, our website and our Facebook page. September 17, 2026 Starting Monday September 21, 2026, the Contractor will be entering the next phase of the Rt. 30 Cooper St. to Grove St. project. The Contractor will be starting intersection (underground) work on the White Horse Pike from Collingswood to Haddon Heights. The first intersection will be Magill Ave. and will continue east. The intersection work involves installation of electrical conduit, junction boxes and foundations for the future above ground electrical items (signal poles, controller cabinets, etc.) Portions of sidewalk and ADA ramps may need to be removed. Pedestrian access will be maintained and/or detoured while work is ongoing. The Contractor expects to be constructing underground electrical work for one to two weeks at each intersection.

Oaklyn Mayor and Council wish to provide clarification regarding the announcement made at the September 8, 2026, Council meeting concerning the closure of the hockey and basketball courts. Following an annual safety inspection of Borough properties by our Risk Management Consultants, it was recommended that this area be closed to residents due to safety concerns regarding the surface, boards, and fencing.

This area has been discussed at previous Council meetings in 2025, when Alex Lewis from Oaklyn United FC Soccer organization brought up the idea of rehabbing/rebuilding the hockey court as a multipurpose area that could serve both hockey and soccer.

Alex and his group showed interest and initiative in hosting a tournament there to donate funds towards the long-term goal of improving this area for the community. This would take several years to complete due to yearly budget restraints and several ongoing Borough projects, including the Senior Center and the new park on Mahheim Ave. He also expressed interest in supporting the Borough by collaborating, researching, and applying for grants to help fund this facility for our community as it progressed.

With Mayor and Council's approval, Alex spent significant time and energy hosting a successful tournament in the fall of 2025 at the hockey facility, with help from volunteers and Oaklyn Public Works, making the area playable.

Alex Lewis and Oaklyn United FC raised over $1000 from the event to help rehabilitate/rebuild the hockey court, with plans to possibly host future tournaments. The Borough did not facilitate receiving these funds because of the long-range timeline to plan and fund a project of this scope. The statement regarding the Borough not receiving these funds referred strictly to the status of the account at the time of our September 8, 2026, meeting and was not intended to be derogatory toward Alex Lewis. He has retained the funds raised and is transferring them to the Borough in the near future.

Mayor and council members will carefully plan the best way to move forward, considering suggestions from our community regarding the hockey courts. As always, the best way to gather direct factual information and give feedback regarding the Borough of Oaklyn and Council is to attend meetings and email members directly. The Borough is moving towards having our meetings broadcast online in the future to help residents be better informed with information.
